Bev Merrill picked a bad weekend to host a wagon ride at her farm in
Owen County in Kentucky. She choose the weekend of June 28-29, 2019. At the time she decided on those dates, she had no way of knowing that this would be the
first hot, dry weekend of the entire summer thus far. Farmers all over the area were weeks behind in getting their first cut of hay and other field work done because
of the extremely wet weather thus far this summer. As a result, Danny Crawford and Butch Adams were the only wagon drivers willing to take a day off to go for
a ride. While the temperatures were in the low 90's, there was a nice breeze most of the day and we only tried to go about 15 miles. We got back to Bev's by about
3:30 and had a nice supper. After we ate, Butch headed home so he could get some of his field work done and Bev and Danny went back out for a late afternoon/evening ride.
Unfortunately, Bev had a lot of food left over as she had been prepared to feed a bigger crowd. So, although it is always disappointing to plan an event and then not
have many folks show up, I know that Bev understood how important it was for everyone to get into the fields and be able to get some important work done. Lets just
hope that it wasn't too late for them!
